What is the shipping price?

Shipping rates are unsteady right now, so we’ll charge them once we are closer to the shipping date. Currently, depending on the country, we calculate the shipping rates between $60-$125. We are working on getting the best deal for the shipping process to offer you the best rate and fastest delivery times.

What about taxes, duties, and VAT?

Our prices do not include any kind of tax or fee imposed by your country (except for the rates we’ve announced for our European backers). For the rest of our backers, we are actively working on getting the best deal.

What about taxes, duties, and VAT?

Our prices do not include any kind of fee imposed by your country. Those are regulated by the laws of each individual country; but, we will do our best to minimize the additional cost. We are working hard to get the best deal for all our backers.

What is the current state of the project and where can I follow the project's progress?

We’ve been testing three mechanism alternatives: cable-driven, H Bot and Scara mechanism. We’ll move forward with the three versions to the production sample stage. You can follow the project’s progress and find all the documentation in our Hackaday post: https://bit.ly/3ilIypD

To which app/software will Phantom Chess connect?

The board connects to the Lichess server to find matches or play against bots developed there. We are knocking on some doors to integrate chess.com because its API is not open; however, our software is open-source, so it will be easy to integrate more apps and software in the future. We will update you once we have further information.

How does the chessboard connect to the Internet?

You have to connect your smartphone to the board via Bluetooth and then use your smartphone to set up all the features, from sculpture to finding matches on Lichess.

How much noise does the board make?

Below, you will find two links to videos filmed in a silent environment, and most of what is audible in that video is the magnet in contact with the board; it’s the sound the piece makes when it slides over the board. The mechanism itself is very silent.

How fast can the pieces go?

The board cannot support blitz, but we worked to have enough speed for fast games plus fluid movements. You can take a look at our IG account (@phantom_chess) or videos in the campaign to get a better idea of how fast the pieces move.

What happens with illegal moves?

If you make an illegal move, the mechanism will return the piece to its square until you move it to a legal square. If you are playing through the app, the app will notify you about this before starting the movement on the board.

What happens with misplaced pieces by the human player?

If someone misplaces a piece on the square, the mechanism will place it correctly and start its own movement. The piece in motion will slightly push for small misplaces; we made sure the pieces won’t attract between them.

Will the board be able to set up a new game?

The user will have to make the initial set up (place the pieces where they belong), and after a game, if none of the pieces left the board, a new game can be set up automatically.

Last updated: March 10, 2022 10:25

Will the app be open source?

Both hardware and software are open-source. You can find our current versions in our Hackaday post https://bit.ly/3ilIypD

What battery does the Cordless version use?

The battery of the cordless version is a Li-ion Battery 2200 mAh. The battery can last up to 50 continuous games.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
